My name is Matthew Miller and I am currently trying to start my career as a professional Product Designer. I have recently graduated from
Nottingham Trent University, having studied a 4 year BSc Product
Design course. From the range of projects I completed and a full techincal report, I was able to achieve a 1st Class Honours in the subject for which I was extremely proud.
I am a hard working individual who always aims to produce the best work possible in the most professional manner. I enjoy working within a team although I am also able to undertake projects on my own, as displayed by my final year major project and the projects I have been working on since finishing university. I feel that I have a very good technical knowledge of Product Design including manufacturing processes, assembly techniques and general engineering practices. This has come from A level design technology along with 4 years work experience within a large lift manufacturing company. To add to this underlying knowledge, I decided to go on an industrial placement year for the 3rd year of the course, hoping to gain valuable experience within a design role.
I undertook my industrial placement at The Quality Furniture Company in Grantham, one of the largest entry level furniture manufacturers in the U.K, producing furniture for Next, Argos, Tesco and more. My role was to act as Design Assistant and this involved a large range of daily tasks, from sketching to 3d modelling whilst also producing product specifications and databases. The role also expanded beyond a standard design post allowing me to become involved within the business side of the company, i.e. costing profiles and product comparison charts, whilst also becoming involved with the Sales and Marketing team. This 1 year placement provided me with a vast amount of knowledge which I can take with me to any future jobs.
I am now aiming to find a job within a design role whether graphical or product design and feel that I would be a good addition to a company from the experience I have gained.
Since finishing university I have been working for International Lift Equipment and have been given a number of projects to work on. Firstly I was asked to produce a full product catalogue for the company and so I created this using Adobe In Design. This has since been printed and is now used as a sales platform for the company products.
Following on from this I have developed a full website for the company with areas which can be expanded in the near future such as online purchasing. This gave me a greater understanding of web development and allowed me to work on a subject I am very interested in.
Alongside these major projects my main role has been producing 3d visuals of products as well as designing products to customer specifications and prosucing 2d drawings to allow for manufacture.
I have also recently been asked to implement a data management system into the company to implement file management which currently is causing some problems. I feel that these oppertunities have greatly increased my strengths as a well rounded designer whilst also allowing me to begin developing some managerial strengths.
